Millet

*The Angelus* is undoubtedly, with *La Joconde*, the most famous painting of Western art. Paradoxically, the whole of Jean-François Millet's work is today to be rediscovered. This is what this retrospective exhibit brings together an exceptional collection of loans from major public and private collections from around the world. The great international retrospective at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille highlights a profoundly inventive artist and admired by the avant-garde, talented draftsman. For a long time labeled a "peasant painter," his paintings and drawings reveal above all the sensitive and poetic universe of an extraordinary painter who has profoundly marked Van Gogh, Pissarro, Seurat, Gauguin, Permeke, Dali and more recently Banksy. The artist has also experienced an American posterity, which the exhibition *Millet USA* makes us discover through works of poets, painters, photographers and filmmakers, from Edward Hopper to Dorothea Lange, via Terrence Malick or Mat Collishaw.
