Born in Ostend, Belgium, Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) was a self-taught artist, despite a brief stint at the Belgian Academy of Fine Arts, forging a powerful artistic identity, shaped by his readings of Edgar Allan Poe and Friedrich Nietzsche. Avoiding oil painting, he worked in combinations of Indian ink wash, Conté pencil, watercolour, gouache, pastel, chalk, pencil and pen on paper or cardboard, to create atmospheric works often imbued with mystery and melancholy.

Beaux Arts Éditions will go back over Spilliaert's life and personality, and give keys to understanding his singular work, while placing it in the context of Belgian symbolism.
