Yoga. Ascetics, yogis, Sufis

February 2, 2022 May 2, 2022 Exhibition has ended
The figure of the ascetic is a recurrent theme in both ancient and contemporary India and is central to many manifestations of Indian art. It illustrates in particular the development of a mental and bodily discipline called yoga in order to withdraw from the world. Dedicated to representations of asceticism, this exhibition brings together a collection of Indian miniatures and sculptures on wood and bronze, from the 10th to the 19th centuries. In all, 70 works, as precious as they are little known.

"Yoga. Ascetics, Yogis, Sufis" attempts to evoke some of the many faces of Indian asceticism. For those who call themselves "yogis" in ancient India belong to all sorts of backgrounds. They are the actors of a universe where common conceptions and practices circulate and which develops a shared culture of meditation, renunciation, liberation or the acquisition of supranatural powers.
