Sarah Bernhardt. And the woman created the star

April 14, 2023 August 27, 2023 Exhibition has ended
More than 600 works of art make up this exhibition that traces the life and career of Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923). The actress was indeed a mythical interpreter of the greatest playwrights such as Racine, Shakespeare or Edmond Rostand. Jean Cocteau said she was a "sacred monster". The opportunity to return to her greatest roles through the presentation of her stage costumes, photographs, paintings, posters ... Her voice, her diction as well as her slender figure, fascinated the public as much as the artistic and literary world that devoted a true cult.

Her name is known to all, yet what exactly is known about this great actress who was as famous as Gambetta and Hugo as reported in the press at the time? Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) was one of the greatest French tragediennes. She left the Comédie Française and in 1880 founded her own company, with which she toured the world and became a true international star. Painter, sculptor, writer, theatre director, she was also a film actress, appearing in about ten films. This book, through an extremely rich iconography and short articles, attempts to reveal the multiple faces of this woman, artist, committed, patriot, ambassador of Parisian style, with the aim of answering the question: Who are you, Sarah Bernhardt?
