Cartier, Islamic Inspiration and Modern Design - Exhibition catalogue
MX022014
WRITTEN IN FRENCH
The exhibition "Cartier, Islamic Inspiration and Modern Design" and its exhibition catalog explore the influence of Islamic arts on the production of jewelry and precious objects at the Cartier house, from the beginning of the 20th century nowadays.
Jewelry and objects from the Cartier collection, masterpieces of Islamic art, drawings, books, photographs and archival documents allow us to retrace the diversity of sources that inspired the shapes and motifs used in Cartier creations.
Sometimes easily identifiable, other times decomposed and recomposed until their source is untraceable, the motifs and shapes from the arts and architecture of Islam integrate the stylistic language of the designers to the point of still constituting to this day part of the house's repertoire, illustrated by pieces of contemporary jewelry which complete this journey.
The mandorles, palmettes, fleurons, foliage, sequins, undulations and scales of Cartier jewelry find their inspiration in patterns adorning book bindings, in oriental architecture or even in ancient and contemporary jewelry purchased by Jacques Cartier during his expeditions to India.
By offering a true immersion in Cartier's creative process, this book reflects the renewal of the forms of this iconic high jewelry house and its manufacturing techniques.
