From the most famous masterpieces in Seoul's National Museum to the most contemporary pieces they have inspired, the diversity of nearly 300 works presented in the Salon d'Honneur of the Grand Palais introduces us to a long tradition of Korean ceramics.
While developing in close relationship with the techniques of neighboring countries, these ceramics have unique characteristics unequalled anywhere else in the world.
Goryeo celadon, for example, is said to be "the most perfect under the sky". The public will also discover other creative periods rarely shown in France, notably "Bucheong" porcelain and "Joseon" white porcelain, witnesses to the inventiveness and spirit of ceramic artists.
Since time immemorial, Korean clay has been used to create objects for both ritual and everyday use. Representing the Earth and the ancestral spirit, these ceramics are today an essential and vital source of inspiration for Korean designers.
In addition to contemporary ceramists, video artists Kyungwon Moon & Joonho Jeon and Kimsooja will be presenting their video creations at the Paris exhibition.
