Soulages at the Louvre

Pierre Soulages, "peintre de l'outrenoir", is a major figure in non-figurative painting, recognized as such since its inception in the aftermath of the Second World War. Born on December 24, 1919 in Rodez (Aveyron), Pierre Soulages, who continues to paint today at a steady pace, will celebrate his 100th birthday at the end of the year. On this occasion, the Louvre Museum is dedicating an exceptional exhibition to him in the Salon carré, located between the Galerie d'Apollon and the Grande Galerie, which once housed the Salon des Académies. Only Chagall and Picasso, on the occasion of their 90th birthday, benefited before him from such retrospectives at the Louvre. This exhibition-homage takes the initiative to give an account of the chronological journey of the work from 1946 to today, by representing through a narrower choice the eight decades during which Soulages developed his research. The exceptional longevity of the artist's career is thus illustrated by a selection of major works, mainly from the greatest French and foreign museums. Not neglecting any period and emphasizing the outrenoir polyptychs, the exhibition will also allow to discover very large paintings made in recent months.
