The power of drawing - Masterpieces from the Prat collection

Initiated in the 1970s by Louis-Antoine and Véronique Prat, this collection, which bears their name, has become one of the most prestigious private collections of drawings in the world, and the first to have been presented at the Louvre in 1995. Le Petit Palais has decided to organize a new and expanded presentation of this collection in 2020 at the opening of the Salon du dessin, an event that brings together all French and international amateurs. The Prat collection focuses on the illustration of the French school before 1900, and is a particularly representative overview of three centuries of French art, from Callot to Seurat. The two amateurs have always favoured works that are highly significant from the point of view of art history, and some of their most famous drawings are linked to the genesis of seminal works of French painting: Versailles sets by Le Brun, Coypel or La Fosse, Andromache pain by David, Ossian dream by Ingres or Famille Belleli by Degas. The drawings of Poussin, Watteau, Prud'hon, Delacroix, Gros, Millet, Redon, Cézanne or Toulouse-Lautrec in this collection are certainly among the most important. The collection also includes masterpieces by artists still forgotten in the past, but to whom art history is gradually restoring their place, such as La Hyre, Restout, Vincent, Peyron, Girodet, Doré and Gustave Moreau.
