Versailles Revival 1867-1937

One hundred years after the French Revolution, at the dawn of the "Belle Époque", a spectacular phenomenon of enthusiasm, nostalgia, curiosity and passion developed around the Versailles of the Ancien Régime. Through nearly 350 works - including a large part from private and international collections -, documents and photographs, the exhibition "Versailles Revival" retraces this surprising moment in the history of art where Versailles takes place among the great literary, pictorial and musical motifs... Artists of all origins seize the place that inspires elsewhere, replicas around the world. At the same time, the Republic convenes its assemblies in Versailles and receives foreign sovereigns. The gardens host aristocratic festivals and popular tourism. The great waters, which never lost their appeal during the 19th century, became a destination for crowds. While a major restoration and refurbishment programme is under way for the Château, which has been visited by more than a million people since 1937.
