Marc Chagall Line The Song of Songs: Masterpiece of Love and Spirituality

Duplicate of Bouvreuil - Hokusai line: Art objects inspired by woodblock prints

Marc Chagall's Song of Songs represents a high point in 20th-century art. This masterful series, created between 1957 and 1966, consists of five monumental canvases housed at the Marc Chagall National Museum in Nice.

The composition of Song of Songs III, created in 1960, particularly reveals the artist's genius. On a 149 x 210 cm canvas, Chagall structures his work around a distinctive horizon line that separates two worlds. The rounded shapes evoking femininity interact with biblical symbols in a vibrant colour palette.

Wear these unique pieces as a tribute to Chagall's art, where earthly love and spirituality intertwine in a timeless dialogue between passion and transcendence.

" I chose painting because it was as necessary to me as food. It seemed to me to be a window through which I could fly away to another world. " Marc Chagall

What is the place of the Song of Songs in the Biblical Message?

The Song of Songs is a set of five monumental paintings that completes the Biblical Message cycle. Originally intended for the sacristy of the Calvary Chapel in Vence, this set is now on display in a specially designed hexagonal room at the Nice Museum.

Why did Chagall depict Jerusalem and Vitebsk side by side?

By juxtaposing Jerusalem and the green-roofed sanctuary of Vitebsk in the lower part of the compositions, Chagall created a bridge between his Jewish roots and his life in exile. This delicate work has revealed the flamboyance of the original colours and enriched our understanding of the artist's creative process.

How were the paintings recently restored?

The works underwent meticulous restoration using scientific imaging techniques such as X-rays.
