If the Slaves of the Louvre owe an undeniable part of their glory to the extreme rarity of Michelangelo's sculptures outside Italy, the history of these two captives, linked to that of Pope Julius II's mausoleum, and the enigmatic nature of their significance have undoubtedly contributed to the myth that places the Dying Slave and the Rebel Slave among the masterpieces.
This work, written by one of the greatest specialists in Italian statuary, takes us into 16th-century Rome, where the effervescence of artistic creation was at its height. The author invites us to follow the genesis of these sculptures and of this monumental project that occupied Michelangelo for almost forty years.
