The village is the most radical and singular of Soutine's landscapes. The subject chosen by the artist seems classical, a landscape, houses and trees overhung by a sky, but here the treatment reveals a tormented personality and the affirmation of a great modernity. Indeed, all the elements of the canvas are subject to spectacular distortions and seem to fit into each other, abolishing any sense of perspective and balance.
