The most emblematic site of royalty, the Château de Versailles illustrates the glorious history of Louis XIV.
From 1730, Jean-Baptiste Massé hired Simon François Ravenet dit le Vieux (1706 - 1774) to create the Grande Galerie de Versailles, an engraved suite of 52 plates of frescoes painted by Charles Le Brun (1619-1690).
Hardouin-Mansart began construction of the Salon de la Guerre in 1678. The decoration, completed by Le Brun in 1686, celebrates the military victories that led to the Peace of Nijmegen. The domed ceiling depicts armed France, seated on a cloud and surrounded by victories. A portrait of Louis XIV adorns the shield.
