A true dive into photography from its invention and beyond the borders of Europe, this book offers a polyphonic history of the beginnings of world photography.
Richly illustrated, alternating geographical sections and transcontinental themes, Photographic Worlds, Stories of the Beginnings invites some fifty authors from the five continents to recount their experiences with the medium and to redraw the paths of photographers who are often unknown, whether they are travelers or natives of the countries covered.
Approaching the work of the first photographers in Bombay or Madagascar, the daguerreotypes made in South America or the portraits of indigenous populations in Australia, the reader will discover the extraordinary diversity of practices and uses of photography from the nineteenth century onwards in different parts of the world.
