WRITTEN IN FRENCH
The national museum of the Château de Malmaison has a complete copy of the reissue of a landscape wallpaper designed by the Dufour & Leroy factory around 1829 and newly restored. It relates - in a toned down mode - five episodes relating to the victorious deployment of the French army against the Austrians in northern Italy in 1796, then against the English in Rome and Naples in 1798-1799.
Around this spectacular 16 meter long "camaieu hanging", documents, objects, paintings, drawings and engravings complete and develop these sequences, evoked with charm and a certain fantasy on the wallpaper. This can therefore be read from two perspectives: the military, Napoleonic and Directory history in Italy (rather represented in the second and third planes), and the anecdotal and decorative aspect (rather in the foreground), in relation to the pleasant character of its destination, which is to create a pleasant universe, conducive to escape, in a bedroom, a living room or a dining room.
Exhibition presented at the Château de Bois-Préau, Rueil-Malmaison, from November 22, 2023 to February 26, 2024.
