THE DIRECTORY, CONSULATE AND EMPIRE STYLES
Appearing in France at the end of the 1750s, neoclassicism underwent several expressions before giving birth to the Empire style.
Overflowing from the imperial period itself (1804-1815) and finding its inspiration in the antique model, the Empire style came at the conclusion of the trends that appeared shortly before the Revolution which continued in the so-called Directory and then Consulate styles. The imperial era also saw the return of an art that could be described as official, expressing itself through the search for solemnity and grandeur dear to the Emperor. All forms of art participated in this movement, which was particularly noticeable in the complementary fields of interior decoration and decorative arts. Through numerous illustrations, this work endeavors to expose the different phases and expressions of this style.
