The Cantini Museum collection embraces a vast period, from 1900 to 1960, through works by significant Modern and Avant-guard artists. Cantini is therefore, along with the Grenoble and Saint-Étienne museums, one of the important French Modern Art museums.
In addition to a broad selection of 20th century European and International art, the collection features masterpieces produced at Estaque by Dufy; Fauvist and Expressionist paintings by Matisse, Friesz et Kokoschka; Surrealist assemblages by Brauner - whose
life is intimately tied to Marseilles -; the emblematic Monument to Birds by Ernst and the Venus of the pavement by Dubuffet.
Ever since it was inaugurated, in 1994, [mac] has been a reference for Contemporary Art in France. Its exceptional collection includes work by the leading figures of Nouveau Réalisme such as Arman and Cesar, important American painters such as Jean-Michel Basquiat or Robert Rauschenberg,
and singular local artists with pieces by Richard Baquié and Gerard Traquandi.
