The notion of intimacy has gradually changed since the 18th century, as revealed by many pieces of decorative art and design, works of art, and everyday images and objects. They all speak to our ways of living and, even more, to their evolution.
Through the contributions of eighteen historians, art historians, and sociologists, and thanks to a highly diverse iconography, this work bears witness to the way in which bedroom or rest furniture, as well as objects related to the bath, amenities, beauty, and sexuality, have been transformed in line with this evolution.
Instruments serving a desire for isolation or, on the contrary, for living together, they invite us to reflect on this question: has intimacy become a tyranny, in an overly narcissistic society that forgets public affairs, or is it threatened by the many recent upheavals we are facing - first and foremost the place taken by new technologies?
