Through the figure of Tom Wesselmann (1934-2004), one of the most famous artists of American Pop, the Fondation Louis Vuitton questions this movement that took over the United States as much as the Old Continent, at the beginning of the 1950s.
Less known than a Warhol or Lichtenstein, Wesselmann is nevertheless emblematic of American Pop Art. His images, inspired by posters and popular magazines, remain the emblems of a consumer society. Two universal themes mainly compose his works, the female body and the everyday object.
Beaux Arts Éditions looks back at this international movement, its roots, and the artists who carried it forward, notably through the work of Tom Wesselmann, the context in which it emerged; deciphers its works, its influences and its heritage.
