Does the "female gaze" in art history exist, especially on the nude? It seems to have been established that it did not exist: women did not have access to nude lessons... dareed... have nothing to say... Or isn't it the opposite? Is it not us, collectively, who have not known and still cannot look at the naked seen by women?
From the 16th to the 20th century, the book traces the history of art and places the nudes of these female artists back in their time. Hildegarde von Bingen, Artemisia Gentileschi, Imogen Cunningham, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Suzanne Valadon, Amrita Sher-Gil, Tarsila do Amaral, Faith Ringgold, Martha Rosier, Cindy Sherman, Louise Bougeois, Alice Neel are some of the many artists to have represented their own.
The nude seen by women artists also raises the question of the appropriation of a body so often thought only to be represented by men, according to European and heteronormal traditions.
What if women simply looked at nudity differently?
