The work and its artist

Camille Claudel (1884-1943)

A major sculptor of modern art, Camille Claudel was Rodin's pupil but also his muse and lover. Often confined to her relationship with Rodin, Claudel struggled all her life to free herself from it and gain the recognition of her contemporaries and family. Talented, Camille created one of her major works in 1899, "L'âge mûr" (The Mature Age). The subject is both personal, since it evokes her impossible love with Rodin, but also testifies of her artistic qualities and her technical mastery, especially nudes. For a long time his work was little known to the general public and kept under the shadow of Rodin, in fact, although she was very talented her career was short, she was forcibly interned and died anonymously.
