WRITTEN IN FRENCH
The Issenheim Altarpiece, a late-Gothic masterpiece, was created between 1512 and 1516 for the Antonine Commandery in Issenheim. It combines exceptionally dramatic painted panels by Grünewald with wooden sculptures by Nicolas de Haguenau, created around 1490.
The altarpiece combines biblical figures and themes of suffering and resurrection, while reflecting the spiritual and medical concerns of the period.
Its restoration in 2022 has restored the work to its original splendour, allowing certain details to be rediscovered, as well as the colours chosen by the artists.
Daniel Konieczka's book presents the Issenheim Altarpiece from three angles: the life of Saint Anthony, the story of Jesus, and the role of the work among the Antonines, while highlighting Grünewald's pictorial work. Designed for children, it combines iconographic analysis and interactive elements to offer a truly immersive experience of this prodigious work.
