Because they seem to defy time, the mummies populate our imagination, arousing fear or fascination. At the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle and elsewhere, they are at the heart of interdisciplinary research programs.
To be interested in these deceased, in the rituals that accompanied their conservation, it is to meet singular existences, lifestyles and beliefs that transport us through the eras and continents, from the vast necropolises of ancient Egypt to the peatlands of Northern Europe, through the Tarim basin, in Asia, or by the funerary towers of the summit of the Andes...
In the light of the most recent scientific advances, this book invites us to grasp all the richness of the practices of mummification and to question, also, the look that we look at these deceased, who confront us with otherness as much as ourselves.
Exhibition at the Musée de l'Homme from 19th November 2025 to 25th May 2026.
