About 150 million years ago, Europe had a tropical climate, and a shallow sea partially covered the continent.
It was an era of coral reefs and lagoons teeming with fish: sharks, rays, coelacanths, coral grazers... Sea urchins, sea lilies, mollusks, and crustaceans inhabited the seafloor. Islands and islets were covered with tree ferns and inhabited by giant tortoises and all manner of reptiles...
From time to time, storms washed animals-both living and dead-and plant debris into the Cerin lagoon, where they were preserved in extraordinary condition.
The Museum houses a collection of 1,700 fossils from this remarkable site. They were discovered during the operation of the Cerin lithographic stone quarry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Recent excavations have provided a better understanding of and allowed for the reconstruction of the environment at that time.
This book invites you to discover the great variety and beauty of these fossils and to let your imagination transport you... back to the age of the dinosaurs!
