Explorations: a matter of state? retraces 300 years of history, from abyss to space, through the French military fact. From marine engineering to astronauts, from seabed specialists to data analysts, the military of yesterday and tomorrow are the eye and arm of the state in unknown circles.
Drawing on unpublished documents, works and specimens of extraordinary diversity, the Musée de l'Armée proposes a cross-section of the motivations and consequences of exploration. Who decides and finances these companies that are expensive in men, transportation and equipment? Under what conditions are they conducted and for what purposes? Thanks to the lighting of about thirty specialists, this book deciphers the complex relationship between science, power and strategy to reflect on the issues of the contemporary world.
