Follow JR's evolution from his Parisian beginnings-his graffiti on rooftops and in the metro-to his emergence as an artist of extraordinary stature. Graffiti is a declaration of presence, and that impulse has never left JR. On the contrary, he has expanded upon it by transforming urban bridges, favelas, and prison courtyards into canvases visible to all. JR draws inspiration from William Hogarth and Eugène Delacroix, from Francisco Goya to Diego Rivera.
He has reinterpreted the public portrait by adapting it to the 21st century with works that exploit digital artifice while simultaneously denouncing it. In the age of Photoshop and AI, his materials-paper, glue, human collaboration-are resolutely real. The illusion lies solely in his famous trompe-l'œil. From Paris to the world's conflict zones, he moves toward tensions rather than fleeing them.
Projects like Face 2 Face bridge political divides through paired portraits, while his Chroniques have transformed entire neighborhoods into panoramic human landscapes, evoking the narrative power of historical murals. Works such as Mayra and Picnic across the Border are staged encounters as much as they are images-scenographic spaces where physical and psychological barriers dissolve for a moment.
He constantly re-contextualizes: architecture becomes a canvas, strangers become protagonists, and fleeting gestures become lasting images. Rooted in photography, his work also expands its horizons. JR's art unfolds through collaboration, scale, and shared creation; its most powerful impact is often intangible-it is the conversations he sparks.
This compelling book revisits his most iconic works, featuring behind-the-scenes photos and in-depth essays.
