At the end of the 18th century, during the reign of King Jeongjo, the chaekgeori, an unprecedented pictorial genre, appeared in Korea. On screens unfold ideal libraries in trompe-l'oeil, populated by books, precious objects and curiosities, in a game of optical illusions skilfully mastered. Born from the will of the sovereign - too overwhelmed by the affairs of the kingdom to read - to be symbolically surrounded by knowledge, the chaekgeori testifies to rich artistic exchanges with China and Europe. In contrast to Western vanities, these painted libraries celebrate less the ephemeral than they embody a cabinet of desires: that of one day possessing these treasures of the mind.

Exhibition at the Musée Guimet, from September 16, 2026 to January 4, 2027.
