Claude Monet spent more than 40 years of his life in Giverny, tirelessly painting the surroundings, his flower garden and the water lily pond. This masterful production has sometimes eclipsed another part of his work : the sets of canvases inspired by more distant landscapes, outside France. Monet is also a great traveler. Since his exile in London in 1870-71, extended by a detour to Holland, he discovered the taste of elsewhere. He returned to Holland to paint the tulip fields in 1886, and to England to give his interpretation of the Thames drowned in the London mist and smog between 1899 and 1903. Italy also seduces him : Riviera in 1884, then Venice on its final trip in 1912. Even more unexpected, in 1895, Monet ventured into the Norwegian winter. What is he looking for outside of France ? New motives ? A different light ? Dialogue with other artistic traditions ? How does he travel, how does he work on the spot, and what works does he relate?
