Here, the neoclassical painter Ingres depicts the figure of the Source. At the centre of the composition is a young girl, fully nude. She is carrying a jug on her left shoulder, which she is emptying of water. Since Antiquity, the Spring has been embodied by the nymphs, goddesses of nature and the elements. The predominance of line and the rigorous execution of forms are particularly characteristic of the artist's style, known for its most illusionistic finishes. The engraver Louis-Adolphe Salmon, a former pupil of the master and winner of the Prix de Rome for engraving, endeavours to represent here the finesse of his teacher's execution.
