Picasso. Bathers and Swimmers.

Picasso. Bathers and Swimmers.

July 15, 2020 January 3, 2021 Exhibition has ended
The Museum of Fine Arts proposes a rereading of the theme of the bathing girl in the work of Pablo Picasso with counterpoints from 19th century artists who influenced Picasso in his treatment of this subject. Other contemporary artists or followers of Picasso will also be presented as they became interested in Picasso's female bathers and found in them a source of inspiration or the pretext for a confrontation.

Phased out of his sculptural pieces from 1930 onwards, the bather as subject is reintroduced to Picasso's work in February 1937. In contrast to the dynamic energy of his sculptures, Picasso's painted bathers are portrayed as static. The huddled form of this bather pouring over her book is rendered through ovals, conveying her concentration as she reads. The curves and angles that make up her body are highly exaggerated, and she has been made to look solid and sculptural through the application of clean charcoal lines and pastel highlights to the paint.
