WRITTEN IN FRENCH

How did the rise of sport, its individual and collective practices, crystallize social and cultural issues at a time when the Olympic Games symbolized the desire to revive the spirit of Antiquity?

From the Impressionist era to the avant-gardes of the first quarter of the 20th century , the book En jeux! Artists and sport (1870-1930) highlights painters, sculptors, engravers and photographers who publicized the changes in sport in their works, the press or illustrated posters, seeing it as an expression of modernity.

Honoré Daumier, Edgar Degas, Gustave Caillebotte, Thomas Eakins, Ferdinand Gueldry, Paul Signac, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Aristide Maillol and Robert Delaunay are some of the artists, sometimes themselves sportsmen, attentive to racing, horse riding , wrestling, rowing, boxing, cycling, football or rugby, who observed bodies in movement, translated the expressiveness of attitudes and gestures and questioned the athletes as new heroes launched to conquer performances.

Exhibition « En jeu ! Les artistes et le sport (1870-1930) » at the musée Marmottan Monet, in Paris, from April 4 to September 1, 2024.
