This catalogue of the exhibition "Guernica" presents the history of one of Pablo Picasso's major masterpieces through the links that united the painting and the artist throughout his life, and the way in which the work infused culture until becoming a popular icon.
Founded in 1937, Guernica synthesizes the plastic research conducted by Picasso for over 40 years. Thanks to the reproduction of more than 130 works by the artist, this book offers a new reading of the masterpieces along the road to Guernica. Exhibited and reproduced throughout the world, the work was at once an anti-French, antifascist and pacifist symbol.
If Guernica is still considered today as a work of a rare power, it is also thanks to the visual, political and literary contexts in which it was exposed: the Pavilion of the 1937 International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques and the importance of relay men such as Michel Leiris or Paul Éluard.
Finally, the catalogue will present a dozen works and testimonies of contemporary artists directly inspired by Guernica.
