Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a contemporary of major conflicts: two World Wars, the Cold War and the events of decolonization. Although he was released from military service and never enlisted as a soldier, the artist lived through the wars of the 20th century as a Spanish civilian and citizen residing in France. Considered a resistant and militant artist at the time of the Liberation, Picasso's relationship to war is, however, complex.
Representations of conflicts are very rare in his work, and his public positions are punctual. Can we then talk about a commitment about Picasso? Featuring numerous paintings, drawings and archival documents, this book offers an unpublished historical reading of the artist's work.
