The Summer Olympic games that will take place in Paris in 2024 are the opportunity, for Monnaie de Paris to celebrate this major international competition through a series celebrating Sport, its values and the athletes. Olympism and Paralympism will be highlighted on those products, struck in France in our art workshops.
In 2023, we are developing a collection of medallions representing the 26 letters of the Alphabet illustrated by 26 Olympic and Paralympic sports.
The Greeks and Romans already practised discus throwing, which appeared around 708 BC. In ancient times, the discus was made of stone, metal or leather, and was roughly shaped like a flying saucer. The modern discus is now made of wood with metal edges and weighs 2kg for men and 1kg for women. This discipline has been on the Olympic Games programme since the first edition in 1896 in Athens.
