During the Consulate, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) knew he had to be portrayed in order to win over the French. He was to be the main architect of his legend. Every possible medium was used, from sculpture to posters.

Absolute authority: with an upright chest, distant gaze and a disdainful pout, the Sun King shines. Proudly ensconced in a monumental 7-meter-high sculpture by François Girardon (1699), Louis XIV on horseback sat at the center of the Place Vendôme before being torn down in 1792 during the French Revolution. Reproduced on a small scale, the bust has since been a resident of the Musée du Louvre. An iconic figure of royalty and French art, Louis XIV now reigns over Trudon's bust collection.
