La remise de chevreuils au Ruisseau de Plaisir-Fontaine is one of a series of paintings of forests and hunting done in the 1860s by Gustave Courbet. Here, four deer are busy around a stream. In a large format often reserved for historical and religious themes, Courbet succeeded in combining an animal painting with a forest landscape. With this composition, he gave pride of place to nature in the heritage of seventeenth-century Flemish landscapes. Emile Daumont, whose landscape engravings are best known, reproduced this forest scene at the very end of the 19th century.
