Spanish painter and engraver Chrysostomo Martinez is best known for his works preserved in churches in the Valencia region. He also stands out for his interest in anatomical studies and science. Very close to the scientific circles of his time, he frequented the Royal Academy of Sciences before being accused of espionage and returning to his native Spain.
The Altas Anatomico is his most famous engraved work. The Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture purchased some of these plates, which is why they are now part of the Louvre Museum's graphic arts collections.
In this engraving, the artist seeks to represent, through skeletons, the arrangement of the bones of the human body in motion. Between anatomical work and still life, the artist plays with representing bodies truthfully in an unreal space.
