Engraving The Four Parts of the World by Charles Simonneau (c. 1639-1728)
This architectural engraving by Charles Simmoneau depicts the ceiling above the Grand Staircase at Versailles, also known as the Ambassadors' Staircase. It was used as a passageway for foreign representatives visiting the court of the King of France. The staircase was commissioned by Louis XIV and designed and completed in 1679 by the architect François d'Orbay. The painted decorations in the imposing vestibule, which no longer exists, were created by Charles Le Brun.
