François Pompon was 67 years old when he suddenly emerged from the shadows with his monumental White Bear, exhibited at the Salon d'automne in 1922. After spending his life working for other sculptors, including Auguste Rodin, he finally made a name for himself with his timeless and lively vision of the animal. Although the Bear has become, 100 years after its creation, an icon of modern sculpture, Pompon's work as a whole, which is just as innovative, remains little known.
